RING
RING
RING
Manabu is awakened from his sleep by the sound of his phone. He was resting on the couch after going for a 5 mile jog.
Not realizing that it was his phone at first, Manabu first turns toward his TV. Some silly Geiko commercial is on at the moment. Manabu shakes his head and begins looking for his phone. After searching around in a daze, he spots the phone on the coffee table.
Manabu Fujiwara:
"Hello, Manabu speaking."
Mongo Fuji:
"Son."
Manabu Fujiwara:
"Hey Pops, how are you doing?"
Mongo Fuji:
"I'm doing fine, how about you're self?"
Manabu Fujiwara:
"I'm hanging in there?"
Manabu can hear Mongo sighs over the phone.
Mongo Fuji:
"What's the matter son?"
Manabu doesn't respond right away.
Manabu Fujiwara:
"It's nothing."
Mongo Fuji:
"Something at work I assume?"
Manabu sighs.
Mongo Fuji:
"Son, I've been dealing with 'business' problems for nearly two decades. Tell me what's the matter."
Manabu sighs again.
Manabu Fujiwara:
"I don't know dad.
"I guess…I came to UWA with the intention of rebuilding, finding myself. After the whole XDF thing, I wasn't sure if wrestling was for me. So, I went back to my job.
"But, I was content; I still wanted to be in the ring.
"I saw UWA as a chance to start over, a second chance. Winning the UWA World Championship was the furthest thing from my mind. And yet, the title kind of thrust itself upon me."
Mongo Fuji:
"Hmm, I see.
"You are starting to feel the pressure aren't you son?"
Manabu Fujiwara:
"Yes, a little bit.
"Wrestlers that I don't even know are gunning for me. Some, like Jake Eaton has even resorted to shady tactics.
"Do these savages have no honor?"
Mongo Fuji:
"My son, that is the illusion of the business.
"You see, most wrestlers strive to be a world champion. They sacrifice everything, even their morals, to obtain a small piece of gold-plated metal. They think that winning a championship will be some type of fix-all.
"Now yes, a title does get your name out there. However, there are reasons why there are only a handful of successful champions out there. Being a champion is a big responsibility, not only do you have to prove that you are the best every night, but you also have to carry the entire company on your shoulders.
"It takes a lot of mental strength my son. Most people of your age are not ready, mentally, to be a world champion."
Manabu Fujiwara:
"I…I understand."
There is a bit of silence.
Mongo Fuji:
"But, my son, you aren't everyone.
"You have been strong ever since you were a boy.
"For what ever reason, fate has chosen for you to be a world champion right now. I know it's tough, I know it's a new feeling. And I'll be honest, it's probably not going to get easier; it will get harder most likely. But this initial reign is going to make you better. You are going to be a better wrestler skill wise, and a better champion in the future.
"And remember my son, that belt doesn't make you a true champion. It is what's in your heart that matters."
Manabu smirks a bit.
Manabu Fujiwara:
"Yes sir, I understand.
"Thank you."
Mongo Fuji laughs a bit.
Mongo Fuji:
"Enough heavy stuff. I've got some news."
Manabu Fujiwara:
"What's that?"
Mongo Fuji:
"I just signed a contract with UECW."
Manabu Fujiwara:
"UECW?
"Where Sensei Johnson works?"
Mongo Fuji:
"Not anymore.
"He is retired…"
Section 2
Manabu didn’t hate most things in life. In fact, for a “wrestler,” he was pretty mild tempered. But, one thing he did hate was shopping at the mall. Although he loved preforming in front of large crowds, Manabu didn’t particularly like walking amongst them.
Besides, he found the mall and bit, shall we say, uncivil.
He always observed hordes of people lined up in front of kiosks, ogling items that would cost them a month’s pay, big women lining up for ice cream at the food court. And let’s not talk about the prices.
But, today, Manabu has been dragged to the mall by Cammy. Last week she had invited him to hang out with her after he gave her that Nook Tablet that he was forced into buying. He decided that he go along—for her.
At the moment Manabu is sitting on a stool in Hot Topic; Cammy is in the dressing room. Loud, blaring metal music is pouring through the speakers. Uncomfortably, Manabu glances around the store. At the entrance, two Goths are talking about something; Manabu really didn’t care to hear. He look over towards the wall and spots t-shirt with a Hello Kitty character holding a bloody knife.
Cammy comes out a few seconds later and taps him on the shoulder.
Cammy:
“Ready to go?”
Manabu Fujiwara:
“I’d thought you’d never ask.
“But, you didn’t find anything?”
Cammy:
“No.
“Would you mind if we went to Macy’s?”
Manabu Fujiwara:
“No, not at all.”
Manabu promptly hops off the stool and walks out of the store with Cammy.
Hot Topic was on the West side of the mall; Macy’s was all the way in the North Eastern corner. The two began to make their way towards the shop.
Cammy:
“So, I was playing around with that tablet you gave me, it’s even more amazing than I thought!”
Manabu laughs.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“I’m glad that you liked it.”
Cammy:
“So, let me ask you something.”
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Sure.”
Cammy hesitates for a moment.
Cammy:
“Do you get lonely, you know, because of your job?
“I’m know wrestling is a lot different than other careers, it seems like there is no unity. Everyone is out to get everyone. How do you deal with that.”
Manabu nods his head.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Well, I’m not sure if ‘lonely’ is the right word, but I understand what you mean.
“As children we are taught that the best sports revolve around a ‘team,’ but, that’s pretty much nonexistent in wrestling. Not to mention wrestling is a tricky career, because in most case you are the only person invested in your own path.
“So, yeah, I feel alone at times.”
Cammy:
“So who do you confide in then?”
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Usually my dad, since he has been wrestling for a while.”
The two walk in silence for moment.
Cammy:
“You know, I’m always here for you if you need anything.”
Cammy and Manabu had been friends for years, ever since the freshman year of college. There had always been a mutual attraction between the two, even now. But rather than address it, the two just never talked about.
Manabu smiles
Manabu Fujiwara:
“I appreciate that. I’m lucky to have a good friend like you.”
Cammy:
“That you are.”
The two share a small laugh but walking in silence for a bit. Cammy eventually breaks it though.
Cammy:
“Manabu, you do…do you think you might ever see me as something more than a friend?”
“Well, I guess this was going to come up eventually,” thought Manabu to himself. Manabu turns a give her a small smile.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“I guess this conversation is long overdue huh?
“Well, to be honest, I always thought you and I could be more than just friends.”
Cammy laughs.
Cammy:
“Really?
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
Manabu gives her a playful shrug; she give him a light punch.
Cammy:
“Sooo?”
Manabu Fujiwara:
“So?”
Cammy:
“Can we make this happen?”
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Cam, you know it’s hard dating a wrestler. I’m gon…”
Cammy:
“I didn’t ask that. I asked can we make it happen?
“Can we make it work?”
Manabu puts his arm around her.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Yeah, we can.”
Section 3
The scene opens up with Manabu dressed in an all-Black suit. His White dress shirt is unbuttoned a bit, making Manabu look a bit unkempt, as if he threw on the suit in a rush.
He is placed in front of a huge UWA banner, which is hanging on the wall. He must be backstage somewhere in the arena.
In his hand is a microphone.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Please pardon me. Normally, I’d deliver a short story to accompany my promo, something to draw you all in. And normally, I wouldn’t stand in front of you with a stupid microphone.
“But, frankly, I just don’t give a f*** right now.
“What’s up with my demeanor? Well, I’ll tell you.
“I’m supposed to be the head of this company. Sure, Ryan owners the company, but I’m the one that puts a***s in those seats! I deserve the utmost respect, from Ryan and from everyone else in this company.
“And yet, day after day, I’m faced with blatant disrespect by some of my so-called peers. The other day I was backstage, getting some tea, chilling. I met up with Cashmen, one of my opponents this week. We had a small friendly chat—real chill.
“Then out of know where, ‘Classy’ J’s a** decides to interrupt. Not only did he interrupt, but he then starting talking s*** about his little briefcase.”
Manabu sighs.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Mr Callahan, over the past couple of days, I had to go back and do my research on you. I’ll be honest, you weren’t ANYWHERE on my radar before I talked to you backstage. And I’ll be honest; you STILL aren’t on my radar. You walk around with that briefcase as if YOU held the title, as if you are actually someone of importance. But, in reality you aren’t one bit. Callahan, you hold a shot at my title, key word SHOT. You have an opportunity to steal this belt from my, but, you also have the opportunity to receive an a** whooping, courtesy of me.
“Callahan, you are just like 99 percent of the fools in the promotion; you are a no-named bum who wrestles part-time. Perhaps if you spent more time in the gym instead of messing around with that Jersey Cougar, then maybe people would actually know who you are.”
Manabu shakes his head.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“I know what you are thinking. How can I come out here talking about ‘respect,’ but show you such disrespect?
“Well, it’s simple Callahan. Whether you like me or not, you can’t deny my skill. I’m the most technically sound wrestler in this company. I was trained by Japan’s finest—most of you all here learned to wrestle from playing Fire Pro on the NES or jumping off the tops of your houses. The fact of the matter is this; I’ve earned my respect. I’ve made some shady decisions in my short wrestling career. And instead of giving up like most people would, I picked myself up, dusted myself off, and continued to fight. I continued to fight like I always have. That’s what makes us different Callahan. I can tell that you aren’t a fighter, not one bit. Sure, you can put a fool in the hospital, but you can’t ‘fight.’
“You see, if you were a fighter, you wouldn’t be on camera saying that you are broke, like you did a couple of days ago. If you a true fighter, you would have trained harder, pulled yourself up by your boot-straps, and got yourself some money.
“But no, that’s not like you is it ‘Classy’ J? No, instead of training, you would rather mix food coloring ten minutes before your match in your locker room.
“And you really think you are fit to hold this belt? I don’t respect you Mr. Callahan, because you haven’t given me a reason to do so! So, you can take your ‘man purse’ and go on somewhere.”
Manabu sighs.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“This week is going to be very euphoric for me.
“Callahan, you picked the wrong time to poke your nose into my business. But, it’s all good. I’m going to prove something to you in this match. I’m going to prove that you aren’t ready to hold this title. Let’s be honest, the real reason why you don’t want to cash your shot in right now is because you know you don’t got a snowball’s chance in hell of beating me. The only person in this company to almost do so is Jake Eaton, and even in that triple treat match he couldn’t pin me—he had to pin Silas.
"I’m not out to hurt you in this match Callahan, but, I’m going to SHOW you why I am the champion. This belt wasn’t handed to me—I earned it. You have no idea what I had to do to get to where I am, in my life and my career. And I’ll say this, I don’t give a Ryan if doesn’t want me to hold this belt. I’m a proud man, a man of honor. I’m going to fight until the end. And if he wants his beat back, then he needs to put me against a wrestler that is better than me.
“But that wrestler isn’t you!”
Manabu takes a breath, trying to gain his composure.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“But, Mr. Callahan, you aren’t my only opponent in this match. There is one other.
“That man is Shawn Cashman.
“Now Cashman, I met you couple of days ago, but I’ve known about ever since you joined the company. You see, you aren’t like some of these other fools. I can tell that you love this business and that you are serious about it. Furthermore, you train; you actually TRY to improve every week.
“You don’t understand, that’s a breath of fresh air to me!
“But, sir, that doesn’t not mean d*** thing when we step into that ring. I know when I step into that ring I’ve got a large target on my head. You and everyone else is trying to rip my head off each night. You will be coming at me with everything you’ve got.
“And why wouldn’t you?”
Manabu smirks.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“I’ll be honest; you remind me a lot of myself Cashman. And that’s going to make this even more fun.”
Manabu begins to laugh.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“I was going to say something about my title, but forget that.
“I’ll be honest with you all; I didn’t come here to win any belts. I came here because I was given an opportunity to prove myself.
“I’d be a fool to pass that up right?
“And on this quest to prove myself, I was given an opportunity to win the UWA Championship.
“Again, I’d be a fool to pass that up right?
“Has it all been worth it?
“Sure. It’s been hard. But hey, I came to this promotion to prove something right? And, I’ve done that. I proved to you all that I’m one of the best in the world, certainly the best in this company. But most importantly, I proved something to myself. Winning the UWA Championship washed away previous doubts that I had about my abilities.”
Manabu smiles.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Whether you like me or not, I’m here to stay!”
Manabu laughs.
Manabu Fujiwara:
“Cashman, see you out there man. Let’s tear down the house.
“Callahan, I hope you can keep up.”
Manabu shrugs.
The camera fades out.
