We open on a scene taken out of time... numerous, gruff-looking men kneeling along the banks of a river. In their hands, instruments are being used to strain through mounds of wet mud.
As you watch, a voice-over can be heard.
Voice: Sometimes, you have to do things the hard way.
The scene now becomes overcast with a faded, brownish hue. The colour denotes the archaic nature of the footage. From the right side of the screen, the source of the voice...Klayton “The Machine” Gunn... now steps into view. Behind him, the image of the gold continues to move.
Klayton: In the 1840s, so many came to California hoping to strike it rich. When they got here, they found out that it wasn't as easy as the papers had made it sound. Day after day, they worked themselves ragged trying to pluck morsels of gold out of the dirt. Some days, you turned a profit. Others, you didn't find a thing. And often, what you gained on the good days was spent trying to keep you and your family supplied with basic necessities.
For so many in the wrestling game, this is a fitting metaphor. They entered the business with golden dreams, thinking they'd be the next one to change their lives forever. Match after match, they go to work and pursue the dream. They win some, they lose some... but never really gain any ground. What wins they do get, they aren't big enough to build a legacy. When the next show comes around, the crowd can't even remember your last match. They were too busy getting popcorn, or talking about that night's Main Event, to pay attention.
But every now and then...
As Klayton Gunn looks behind him, the background image changes. To his left now, we see a large mound of gold bars. The neatly-stacked pile stands just as tall as Klayton. As he keeps looking at it, the colouring of the image now returns to the same "live" colour that Klayton himself bears. In fact, it's as if Gunn has passed through the background to become a part of the scene. To make this even more clear, he reaches out and takes a gold bar from the top of the pile. Looking back to the camera, now, Gunn holds the bar out as he continues.
Klayton: Every now and then... you hit the mother lode. All your goals, hopes, and dreams get packaged up and made ripe for the taking. And all you have to do is show up! All you have you to do is get there first, and the gold is yours! And in wrestling, when your match is against someone you have beaten time and time again...you feel like entering that match knowing you have already won but that's when you're at your weakest...I'm not like that, yes I think I'm going to win but I also know to expect the unexpected and THAT is the mother lode!
In a one on one match against Fear, it's not about who's impressive first. I'm the main competitor who will compete this coming week...I have found the mother lode. I took my opportunity that was at my fingertips. The problem is for Fear is I'm the ONE who has claimed the prize to prove it. I found the cave. I have walked inside and seen the gold. But now, it's a fight to see who comes out alive!
With a smirk, Klayton sets his bar back on top of the pile. He looks it over, shakes his head at its splendour, then gets back to his address.
Klayton: When I win this match, not only will the win show I'm worth the ultimate prize I have by winning yet again but making Fear pay for thinking he can step in the ring yet again with me. But along with it, I will have to be taken seriously. I will not only beat this guy who calls himself Fear but embarrass him yet again, I don't take to lightly to being underestimated by people and I know that's just what Fear will do. Also with this win I will prove to everyone in this company I'm the yard stick for all who wish to give this company it's time.
Gunn's face now tightens as emotion takes hold. Intensity begins to pour out in both tone and expression.
Klayton: Every body... every victim... are the building blocks of a legend. Over the last ten years, I have decimated so many. I've taken big heaps of muscle and showed them up as worthless blobs. Hell, I've even ran many right out of the business!
But with all that... what have I ever really gained?
Sure, I made some guys look like garbage. But in all honesty, it wasn't hard. All I did was confirm what everyone already believed about my talent. So, while that's not without its own merit, it certainly doesn't impress. It's just another day... just another match... and I don't care if it doesn't earn me any points with the crowd or anyone for that matter but I will make the UWA management and locker room pay attention to their World Champion.
But in this match... something TRULY impressive shall be witnessed! Fear is not a worthy foe, and his defeat may mean something to these UWA fans, but to be honest it may not... I just don't know and don't care. When this match ends, and I'm standing there with arms raised in triumph, Management will know that something big is happening to their company.
Not "for" their company. Not even "in" their company. But TO their company... because this is an attack! This is a one-man invasion! I'm not here to help, but to conquer. And if the boss, his staff, and the sponsors prosper... then so be it. I'll get mine, and they can hop a ride on the train to get theirs. But just like they could all be made rich, just as likely, there could be nothing left of UWA when I'm done. If the boys and girls don't know when to start running out the door, then they'll end up broken down and collecting on disability, just like the worthless piece of S**T FEAR!!!
Gunn steps forward now, occupying the entire scene with his presence.
Klayton: If that sounds selfish... I don't care! It's what HAS to be done, and I'm the only one who can do it. And before you go judging me, think long and hard about the nature of this business. Think about UWA's place in the big scheme of things. If everything goes right, then this will be a war that actually does some good! What you'll find, people, is that what I want for myself isn't too far from what you want, but the only difference is that I have the talent and ability to do this, the rest of you wouldn't know where to start.
I want you people, each and every night, to leave UWA events in a state of shock. I want you calling your priests and asking if the world is coming to an end, because you just saw the second coming! I want your eyes bleeding from the carnage you've witnessed, and your ears ringing from the drum-busting shouts. I want to see the sold-out arenas, the record-breaking ratings, merchandise sweeping through the streets... all the things that NOT A DAMN PERSON in UWA has the ability to accomplish over than Klayton “The Machine” Gunn, Denise du Pris and Neptune with the help of Klayton. I want all this not for the fan's but for the management so they see that I'm the best they have, they see what a waste all my victim's was.
Lost in the moment, Klayton's practically shouting now! His chest heaving, his nostrils flared, and his eyes wide... he pauses and allows the fire to cool. He looks away for a moment, composing himself, then turns back with a more controlled nature. A smirk, and a small grin with the little curl of the lip, now returns.
Klayton: I want all this, UWA, because it's what I was born to do. The first Saturday morning that I stumbled across a wrestling show, I saw something that I knew was special. And very quickly, I realized that I'd found a calling. My body was built for the battle. My mind... sharp as they come... makes me the ultimate game-planner. And my heart, young and vital, hungers for the glory! I will dominate this week against Fear, and the matches it will lead to, because it's the only thing I could possibly do. You can't fail when you are flawless.
You can't fail when you're Klayton “The Machine” Gunn!.
With that, Gunn now steps back and gets besides the gold pile. He leans against it, resting casually, and mouths to the camera, "It's all mine," as the scene fades out.
